Trips are for....

Well, they are not for taking pictures and saying "I was there" or "I saw this"...

For me, any trip, any travel to another country implies learning:
- Learning about the people
- About the history
- About the culture
- About the nature
- and about everything......

So, basically you have to learn to make the trip a unique experience.

In my last trip, I tried to learn many things but as usual... there is too much information, But I will try to remember and summarize XD

So.... What did I learn in Iceland?

- Icelandic is very similar to Old Norse. It has not changed much since its origins and many old texts can be read by modern icelanders.

- The first person that settled down in the country was Ingólfur Arnarson who came to the country in the year 870 with his family. Apparently, he got to the east coast and threw the pilars of his chair to the sea trusting that the gods will show him where he should settle. The pilars appeared on the West Coast 3 years later and he settled in a place that he later called Reykjavík (which means Smoky Bay) after the steam from the geothermal vents.

- The world's first democratic parliament (Alþing) was established at Þingvellir, the National Park in 930

- The settlers were mainly Norwegians (men) and Irish slaves (women)

- The country converted to catholicism on the year 1000. It was decided in one night at the Alþing and all the country was catholic now, but they could worship other gods in private.

- Around 1200, Iceland was ceded to Norway (someone brainwashed the icelanders by influence of the king of Norway) and then, with the Kalmar Union, they formed part of Denmark (where they became Lutheran) and then got their independence back in 1944

- The first european to reach the american continent was an Icelander, Leifur Eiríksson, around the year 1000, but he didn't settle, so.. the Icelanders discovered America!!

-  The last names of the Icelanders include the father's first name and the suffix dóttir (daughter) or són (son)

- There are no native mammals in the island

- When whale is cooked 3/4 it's really good, and when it's burned, it tastes like old cow!

- The world geysis comes from a geysir called Geysir in south Iceland haha

- Keiko was from Iceland ;)

And I guess that's all. If I remember, I'll write more XD
